JEDDAH: The International Islamic Relief Organization-Saudi Arabia (IIROSA) has made an international call to provide urgent humanitarian and food assistance to the Somali people who are suffering from famine and drought.
Concluding its sixth general assembly meeting in Jeddah on Thursday, IIROSA made an urgent appeal to all countries and organizations of the world.

More than 220 members attended IIROSA's general assembly meeting Under Secretary-General of the Makkah-based World Muslim League Abdullah Al-Turki.

"The president and members of the general assembly would like to direct this urgent call to all the government, local, regional and international organizations and the UN agencies and organizations, particularly the World Food Program to provide humanitarian assistance to the Somali people who are facing difficult humanitarian situation as a result of drought and famine," the general assembly said in a statement.

The Somali people, who were plagued by more than two decades of internal wars, are now facing famine because of lack of rain for many consecutive years.

"The drought and famine have resulted in the death of many people in Somalia and the deterioration of the humanitarian situation there," the appeal said.

The general assembly said it was the responsibility of the people of the world to come to the help of their brothers in need.

"We should feel for each other. It is our consolidated responsibility to provide humanitarian assistance to those who are in need," the appeal said.
